OPENING PUBLICATION

ARE YOU READY TO WRITE?

– L.

And in this headquarters that almost smells like parchment paper and ink, quills spread out on desks and films drenched in water and chemicals, you will never think that this headquarters is actually a "bardagulan" ring for almost every member in here.

"Ayan na, ayan na. May bardagulan na!"

"Nasaan na yung referee? Bilis!"

"Sandali! Yung popcorn ko, kukunin ko na."

Dead Press Society is a publication that aims not only to be a platform for those who aspire to be a journalist and express their writing skills and creativity but also to be a platform in which people whose voices cannot be heard reach out to the public. It also aspires to create a place for writers to meet people who share the same interests to help them grow and improve.

After establishing the base last May 2020, the editors-in-charge, Sinteya Marie "Sin" De Castro, Larkin Oliver "Kio" Sicario Andromeda, and Leviticus "Levi" Parker, have spent their time polishing the publication, executing interviews and accepting members that would be considered as their journalists and writers.

DPS has accepted three batches of applicants already, having a tally of 23 members as of the moment. The members are separated between the different sections namely: Creative, Editorial, Feature, and the Non-writing section. The base has also executed a workshop for the members already last July 11, 2020, to help the members enhance their skills depending on the section they were in.

With the opening of DPS on the 18th of July this year 2020, the members have been tasked to do articles and illustrations that are facilitated by the editors-in-charge to be released into the opening publication that will be publicized at the base's opening. The opening publication has the theme "Writing", making the members express and showcase their skills about writing itself.

However, despite all the seriousness that the members try to show in their writings, may it be an empowering feature article to an aggravated and outraged editorial article, the members still manage to make the environment light by creating inside jokes in the headquarters such as "Dream Press Society", and the "bardagulan" sessions from time to time, that are led by the EICs themselves.

When asked about their thoughts on being a member of DPS, Shantelle Salvador, a member of the editorial section has said that "I really take DPS as a place to really mold me to the writer I really wanna become. It helps me find my own voice to share my thoughts or whatever it is that left unsaid."

Another member from the feature section, Ashanti Aeldra Choi Dior, has said that "Being part of DPS made me more confident in writing kasi there are people from the group who gave me support kahit kakakilala ko lang ang cute cute tsaka po being part of this publication group helped me a lot to look on the bigger and brighter side of a topic."
(Being part of DPS made me more confident in writing because there are people from the group who gave me support even though we have just met. Also, being part of this publication group helped me a lot to look on the bigger and brighter side of a topic.)

That being said, Dead Press Society aims to continue publishing articles and showcasing not only the members' works but also people who are not confident enough about their works by making the editors-in-charge proofread it and help them to hone their skills. This is not only a publication but also a place of improvement, a place of creative expression, and a place for people with different beliefs and principles to unite.

"No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world."
